Brooklyn Man Arrested After Recording Police Stop-And-Frisk Wins $125K Settlement

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Brooklyn man was awarded $125,000 in a settlement over his arrest after recording a stop-and-frisk encounter on his cellphone in 2012.

According to published reports, Dick George was sitting in his car on June 14, 2012 when he saw police searching three youths.

George took out his cell phone and began taking pictures of the search.

Court papers allege the officers overheard George telling the three to get the officers’ badge numbers next time and in response, violently pulled George out of his car and arrested him.

George spent 45 minutes in police custody and was charged with disorderly conduct.

The NYPD recently issued a memo reminding the entire force of the public’s right to record their activities.

The move came after the cellphone video of Eric Garner’s fatal chokehold last month, which sparked national outrage and demands from community leaders for change within the police department.
